Nolan, What happens when equal force is applied to both gear sets? I think you have introduced an equation into Mikes' question that confuses the original facts. Reread his post and don't add anything. Equal force on each gearset will result in the same amount of work, ignoring mass and weight. That's how I read the engineers' handbook.
