Ya-Pre-heat. It involves warming the metal you are going to weld. the reason I do it on thicker jobs is to reduce warping and the main reason is to increase penetration. I either use a torch but most of the time I tack weld it real good and let the heat dissipate for 30? seconds and then weld it. When the last pipeline came through our farm in 99 I would go out every morning with the three wheeler and see what they were doing. When the welding crew came though they had 2 people with those big "weed burning torches" to pre-heat the pipe. When they had it to the temp they wanted they would set the doghouse over it and mig-weld it. The torch also takes the impurities out of the metal.---Tee
