A lot of good tips here. I once asked a local old time tractor mechanic why some tractors seem to kick back a lot when hand cranked and some don't. He said that the key to preventing most kick back was the timing of the ignition. If it is too far advanced it will kick back - hard and often. If it is retarded where it should be, kick back potential will be greatly reduced. Just in case though, follow the advice below and be ready for it anyway.
