Tricycle tractors were used alot for cultivating after crop was planted. This was the farmers only meens of weed control untill the crops got to tall to cultivate. Chemicals (weed killer) didn't really come out and take a hold untill say the 60's. Therefore cultivating was really important before chemicals. The narrow front end would go down the middle of a row and each rear wheel was adjustable to the various different row widths and would go down the middle of rows as well. When you got to the end of the feild (to your turn row) the narrow front end would allow you to turn much sharper than a wide front end. You can turn on a dime with a tricycle tractor using your turning breaks. This is almost impossible with a wide front end. Therefore you run over less crops in your turn row. When chemicals really took over in the 60's the narrow front end faded away from the new tractor options. Crops could then be hit one time with spray and didn't need to be cultivated several times. The narrow front end was convenient for other reasons but cultivating was the main drawing card.
