There is a lot of good advice here, and I can add one thing to it all. A good rule of thumb is if the tractor or car or whatever has an oil filter use detergent oil. The detergent is made to suspend particles so the filter can trap them. If you don't have an oil filter use Non detergent oil and clean the oil pan yearly by dropping it off the engine and clean out the bottom. The larger particles will settle when the engine sits over night and stay in the bottom of the pan in the form of sludge that can be removed by cleaning. The oil change interval is also shorter when no filter is used (with non detergent oil) because the smaller particles will take longer to settle out.
