Drain the oil and poke your little finger up the drain hole and wiggle it around, if you find sludge it more than likely had non detergent oil. If there is hardly any sludge the previous owner probably used detergent oil. We use 10w30 in our IH 350.
As far as lead substitute it is so cheap and simple to use why not use it?
