First, what happened was tragic, and I hope that the survivors make full recoveries.

Second, there are many shows across the country that feature steam engines, which manage not to explode. Also, there are still steam trains in operation. What happened was an isolated incident.

Third, the age of a boiler is not as important as it's being thoroughly checked and operated in a safe manner. A brand new one is still capable of exploding if it is not operated in a safe manner.

Forth, is a point that no one has mentioned. We are all exposed to a similar situation in our everyday lives, and don't think about it. Very few homes or buildings with running water don't have a hot water heater. That's right. A hot water heater. They aren't as large as this steamer, and might not have as great a force, BUT they are very capable of blowing up, if something goes wrong. That's why they have a safety valve on top, to hopefully let off pressure if something goes wrong. It doesn't always work. Hot water heaters can, and sometimes do, explode. Now.. how many people would be willing to go without hot water, just because the hot water heater could possibly blow up?

Enough damage has already been done. Let's not worsen it by turning against each other. What happened should be a wake up call for each of us to be careful when playing with our toys, or anything else which we do. To quote the cop on "HILL STREET BLUES" "Be careful out there!"
