We restored some old doors like that one where over the years there had been extra latches, dead bolts etc added here and there and some of the mechanism pockets were loose like people had tried to kick the doors in. An old locksmith in town told us to use automotive body filler to fix the holes and tighten up the pockets. Worked like a champ and also fixed dog scratches, nicks etc. It doesn't match the wood but our doors were painted. Just say'en if you have the need.
