There are alot of variables involved here, what type of paint, what primers and what type of paint gun. Some of the automotive primers are tintable, allowing you to color the primer so it will cover easier. Also different paints will cover different as well as different colors will cover different. Different paints also reduce differently, some base coats reduce 1:1 so two quarts mix to a gallon sprayable which should do a VAC. If you have a HVLP spray gun you will also save some paint, how much is debatable. They claim a good HVLP has a transfer efficiency of 75% compared to 35% for a conventional gun. I have a Sharp Platinum, a gravity feed HVLP gun and I haven't noticed much paint savings over my old conventional although I love everything about this gun except the $350 price tag. Also if you are restoring the tractor and will be painting it pretty much disasembled you will use a lot more paint. It's better to have some paint left over than to run out, trust me.
