Computer Problem - WHAT'S A MICROSOFT CHAT CONVERSATION FILE???

Often, I get a file or a photo emailed to me by someone and when I go to open it, I can't. My computer gives me a message saying "UNABLE TO OPEN, NOT A MICROSOFT CHAT CONVERSATION FILE". I think most of the things that this happens with are jpg files. Also, somehow I cannot save or make jpg files on my computer, or at least I can't open them once I make them. Does anyone know what the problem might be here?
