A locking differential is: When you get into muddy slippery areas , you can push a button , etc. , and lock the differential so that both wheels turn at the same time. With out a locking differential , one wheel will slip , and then the other. You will be working the brakes from one side to the other. Much better traction when both wheels are digging at the same time.
