Are those dairy farms all filing for bankruptcy and selling out completely, or are they just selling off the dairy business and shifting to other forms of farming, i.e.: cash grain; stock cows; feeder cattle; renting out their land; contract farming; supplying feed to the remaining dairies and accepting manure from those dairies? In the 1960's many small farms in Western Iowa had a few dairy cows for extra income. Most of those quit dairy and switched to other livestock and new crops like soybeans when requirements changed from milk cans to bulk milk.
Mechanization, consolidation and industrialization are constant forms of growth in most other industries too.
