If there"s no seal there and it wasn"t leaking then you"ve answered your own question about can you obtain a metal to metal seal...Thing is I"ve never seen a cartridge type filter on any machine I"ve worked on that didn"t use a seal on the canister. Many cartridge type filters can be used in different applications (ie-with different canister housings). That said their often packaged with the "most commonly" used seal ring or rings for whatever housing that the filter mfg origionally made the filter for. In other words the one you"ve got may simply not have the right seal ring for your application. I know NAPA has a section in the back of their filter book that shows the various seal rings available, by size, if you have trouble finding the right one. Good luck.
