I work at a alternator and starter repair shop for
over 7 years. You by jumping a wire from field to
ground have conducted a very important test. You
made sure your generator and wiring harness all the
way back to the battery are good. By cleaning the
regulator you might have messed up. Generators are
very touchy and so are the regulators. Your best bet
is to replace the regulator, but then you might need
to what they call polarising the regulator. There
are usually good directions that come with the new
one, but here the way it should go. On the regulator
there are 3 to 4 terminals each one maked with little
letters, like B,A,F and some times L. (B) is for
battery (A) is for Armature (F)is for field and (L)
is lite idiot lite that is if so equipt. The instructions
should tell you after the regulator is installed before
you start the tractor and with the battery hocked up
to use a jumper wire and cross or jump from the B
terminal to the A terminal this will polorise the
regulator whether it's a positive ground or a negative
ground system. And by the way if you want to switch
from a pos. to a neg. system, now is the time to do it.
And no the starter will not spin backwards. I hope
