: I am working on my case 300 again. Cant seem to get my tractor to charge my battery. With some advice I have checked the generator. I grounded the "field" terminal of the generator and the ampmeter jumps to about a +10 or so. Does anyone know if this proves my generator and ampmeter are okay. I would assume they are? I made this assumption and took my voltage regulator apart and cleaned off all of the points and electrical connections. My amp meter still doesn't show a positive charge. Does anyone have any ideas. Could I have a junk voltage regulator. If I do, is there any way to check?
Dear Karl
I work at a alternator and starter repair shop for
over 7 years. You by jumping a wire from field to
ground have conducted a very important test. You
made sure your generator and wiring harness all the
way back to the battery are good. By cleaning the
regulator you might have messed up. Generators are
very touchy and so are the regulators. Your best bet
is to replace the regulator, but then you might need
to what they call polarising the regulator. There
are usually good directions that come with the new
one, but here the way it should go. On the regulator
there are 3 to 4 terminals each one maked with little
letters, like B,A,F and some times L. (B) is for
battery (A) is for Armature (F)is for field and (L)
is lite idiot lite that is if so equipt. The instructions
should tell you after the regulator is installed before
you start the tractor and with the battery hocked up
to use a jumper wire and cross or jump from the B
terminal to the A terminal this will polorise the
regulator whether it's a positive ground or a negative
ground system. And by the way if you want to switch
from a pos. to a neg. system, now is the time to do it.
And no the starter will not spin backwards. I hope
I've helped. If you have anymore questions e mail
me.

Today's Featured Article - Ford Part Number Trivia - by Forum Participants. "Replaced by" means the part was superseded. All of my part books date back to 1964 and New Holland have changed some part numbers. They usually put the old Ford part number on the package. I was suppressed when I looked up the part number of the auxiliary drive shaft because for some reason the part number went through a radical change and it lost its "Basic Part Number". Ford part numbers follow the following rules. Most part numbers are in three parts. The middle part is called the ... [Read Article]
