Years ago when I did a lot of hiking and mountain climbing I carried a Silva Ranger. A nice feature of this model is the declination adjustment that you can set to indicate true north for any given geographic area. It worked by rotating the orienting arrow in the baseplate relative to the dial using a small screw - the tiny screwdriver was tied into the lanyard. Most compasses have the orienting arrow printed into the same physical piece as the dial so you have to mentally take account of the area's declination. But, as oldtanker said, it really depends on what you're wanting to do. The Ranger is a little bulky and expensive if you just want something simple to get an idea of the direction.
