I pulled over sized loads in the 90's, a large frontal area blocks a lot of wind, takes a lot for hp to pull and really sucks down the fuel milage. My semi averaged 6+ mpg at that time, pulled a 12' wide x 14' tall load to Salt Lake City thru Ia, Ne and Wy bucking some pretty good head winds, averaged 2.9 mpg on that trip but it paid good.
