I think its almost always better to have them out of the box. That being said, keep the boxes in the attic. Should something happen and you need to sell them, you'll get 50% more per tractor for that cardboard in the attic. Farm toys with boxes always sell for more with the box than without. If you have 100 tractors selling for 25$ each, that cardboard really adds up.
Also, there is a big difference between the toys for kids and the ones on the shelf. That's like giving a 16 year old a 1953 Corvette because they need an older car to drive. Just because its a farm toy doesn't mean there's no value to it. Personally I think there's nothing sadder than a toy tractor kept in the box and away from the kids. But 50 years goes by and suddenly that tractor will sell for $750 at the auction. Seen it many times.
