Nice picture. I worked for a chain link fencing outfit in the summer of 1970, did both residential and small to medium-sized commercial jobs. The owner fabricated a gas-powered auger similar to that unit, not quite as heavy. The operator would move it around in wheel barrow fashion and position it over the hole location. The differential unit was from some smaller British car and it moved up and down the rails using a steering wheel and roller chain system. I wish I had taken a photo of it, it really did work well. This guy who built it could seem to build almost anything to do a job more easily and quicker, pretty smart guy.
