Put a guard rail up around that pit, and maybe also have an always-on LED light to make it easier to see.
I am a bit surprised, however. Granted I only had a cast on my leg that one time, but every time I'd let my leg down, the blood rushing back down there was quite painful at first. Been too long to remember how long that lasted. But then also, I couldn't even swallow aspirin back then, so didn't have any pain killers at all. Maybe that's the difference.
