Most cultures have a flood myth. It's not hard to figure out why: Pretty much everywhere you go in the world there's evidence of massive water erosion; it must have been very perplexing to ancient people who could not have conceived of the real age of the earth. And if they found fossilized seashells in limestone, they wouldn't understand that what is now desert was once under the sea. So they made up stories that explained as best as they could what was clearly in front of their eyes. Now if we could go back a few thousand years and explain these things to those goat-herders, they would probably say "oh, that makes sense". But their half-baked theories got written down as holy scripture, so now it is blasphemy to dispute them, even though scientists from Copernicus on down have disproven them.
