Bob, Hitches and trucks are designed by engineers and they call the numbers on the safe side. You can always get away with a little more but the question is how much for how long. Towing a tractor on a trailer at interstate speeds is much more demanding on your power train than short pulls at low speed. I can not tell you what do do but if the ball on your hitch is stamped "5,000" that is all I would tow. If the GVW tag on your truck says "9,000" that would be my limit. I do wounder about your 3,000 pound trailer. If it is, in fact, that stout then it is overkill for your current tractor. A tandem axle trailer with 3,500 pound capacity will weigh in at about 1,500 pounds. That is within the engineered capacity of a Class II hitch and a 3/4 ton truck.
