The antigen DOES NOT REPLICATE and your body makes antibodies to fight off the invader. It then remembers the antigen and has a memory to reproduce the antibodies quickly. If the virus antigen that DOES replicate gets in your immune response is quick and removes the virus before it can replicate enough to knock you down.
