I made it a standard practice not to EVER mention weight when talking to a woman. Case in point: Many years ago, I was invited out to a Christmas party with a couple that I know. These two were high school sweethearts and had been married quite some time. I had not seen this couple for almost a year and when I saw them at the party, I mentioned to the lady that I noticed she had lost weight and said that she looked great. The rest of the right she was extremely mad at this party. Not at me, but she was mad at her husband because HE hadn't noticed that she had lost a lot of weight. Now in his defense, he sees her every day and when you gradually lose weight, the spouse doesn't notice it when the lose is gradual. If I now see someone who has put on some weight or has the possibility of a "baby bump", I ask my wife about it and get her opinion. There's a lot less chance of somebody getting miffed about it.
