My take on NAFTA and US/Canada is pretty simple. NAFTA is 25 years old. Dairy (and softwood lumber) is not covered under NAFTA. Both should be. If we want free trade, then we need a level (er) playing field. While the US has certain protectionist policies, so does Canada. We need a more fair, or at least equitable, agreement. No, even if Canadas market was wide open to the US, it wouldn't solve the dairy crisis. That is the result of US gov't meddling and controls and the inabilty of US dairy farmers to actually work in their own best interests, ie- more cows hurts you in the long run. But there is absolutely nothing wrong with renegotiating a 25 year old trade agreement that everyone agrees has some flaws.
