I am a Ford guy. The old 4 cylinder engines had to come out to replace the rear main seal. You don't want to do bearings without doing the rear seal. You may be able to get it 90% done from underneath, but you will still need total it out. Splitting takes an our each way on one of those. You will save four hours being able to do it from above. Yes, it is a massive job compared to changing spark plugs, small job compared to remodeling your kitchen. I can't help with the sleeves.
