While not free, I've subscribed to Norton for years. I also use Malewarebytes (free version), a little program called Unchecky that comes in handy when downloading software, and I have my browser set pretty strict. I also use an ad blocker. Lots of people frown on them, but with this super-slow internet speed, don't really have a lot of choice. There are days when I just turn the puter off cause I can't get a basic search-engine page to load!
If you really want good internet protection, can set up something called a "sandbox". Could also set up a "virtual system" on your machine. Either way, there is a barrier between your "online risks" and your computer operating system. If anything ever goes wrong, you can simply dump the virtual (or empty the sandbox) and start again from scratch without fear of damage to the OS.
