There is uninsured bodily damage; uninsured property damage; and underinsured insurance. What you can get depends on what state you live in.
The property damage pays to fix your car if the other driver was at fault. Collision coverage will do this same thing but with a deductible.
The bodily damage pays for medical bills. Health insurance will cover the same thing but with your deductible and copay.
So why do you need either. It has no deductible or copay so if you are in a tight budget you may consider it. It also covers medical cost of people not on you health insurance. Friends riding in your car; your grand kids or grown kids ect........ The thing that makes uninsured coverage so expensive is it pays Pain and Suffering also.
