There is a little bit of a timing issue with Y dropping. If rain doesn’t come within a couple of days or if the soil is bone dry the nitrogen will start going up in the air. Last year I probably lost some y dropped N because it forgot to rain after application. However, the soil was plenty damp so some N was drawn into the soil by the moisture. How much is the big unknown. This year half of the y dropped acres got a little over an inch of rain right away, the applicator was rained out in fact. The rest was put on very wet soil so I’m confident a very high percentage of the N went into the soil. Nothing in farming is for sure. Sometimes we have to take chances, that’s what farming is all about.
