I think we will see more y drop application in the future for several reasons. The biggest reason is to try to keep nitrogen from leaching into the water table by applying smaller amounts in split applications as the corn needs it. My farm has received way too much rain and the corn in lower laying land that isn’t drowned out is pale and yellow from excessive soil moisture and nitrogen loss from leaching. A few days ago I had 10 gallons per acre of 32% nitrogen y dropped on all but 60 acres of the corn to give it a boost. The cost of application is $11 per acre alone on top of the cost of the nitrogen but it should return two to three times that amount in better yield.
When I look back at the way dad farmed when I was a kid and the way we farm now there is no comparison. What will we see in the future. Sorry I got a little ‘long winded’ with my reply.
