How is the manifold? The intake passages and the exhaust passages are cast together on those engines, aren't they?. Could there be a porous spot where fuel is getting in the exhaust side when choked or flooded?
How does it run after its started? Does it idle o.k.?
It could also be a bad exhaust valve seat, which would allow combustion fire into the exhaust manifold.
(I think I heard a story like this once-like 40 years ago- and it involved an AC but cannot confirm it, my Cousin the old time mechanic died.)
