Well the newest JD 4440 is now 35 years old. So just normal wear over time will wear the pivot bushings. Also if you are not taking the load off the front end by jacking it up or lifting the front end with a mounted loader you not getting grease into the place it needs to be to stop wear.
Not a hard fix technically. You have to remove the front axle center. So you have to be able to block/jack the tractor up safely and then remove the axle. If you caught it before it wore into the housing all you would need to do is replace the bushing and the pivot pin. If the housing is worn it depends on how deep it is worn for the type of repair. If it is just a shallow wear place I have had good luck with installing a new bushing with liquid metal filling the worn spot. If it is worn really deep. You will need to remove the saddle too and have a machine shop bore the hole out to round and then bush it back down so the wear bushing fits.
