I just made a game of it. I would try to see how many I could pull from the bottom of the pile before the bales fell down. Of course I got a few scratches. Except for needing some one to stack bales on a wagon, I much prefer sticking forks to unload stacked wagons. My Dad made a hay hoist powered by a JD LUC engine. We just pulled on a rope to engage the hoist and let go of the rope when we heard "trip it" from the hay mow. I like stacking the bales in the hay mow as well since there was not always a bale spitting at you when trying to retrieve the bale before, not to mention the elevator dumping hay chaff at you. Just 8 bales at a time was safer too.
