I don't know if the weather people knew what caused it back then, but now it's known as a rare "heat burst" caused by a nearby thunder storm collapse. In fact, one happened just a couple weeks ago near Breckenridge and Eastland TX. Temperatures went from 85* at midnight but by 1:00 a.m., it was 99*! There was also a 50 MPH wind and the humidity dropped to 10%.
I live just south of Ft Worth, and that morning I noticed there had been a strong wind during the night, though there had been no storm or rain.
