If they are flat mating surfaces, like 2 halves of a housing, there is nothing better than anaerobic sealant to use. You need scotch brite buffing discs to remove it,but I have NEVER SEEN IT LEAK.You apply it on the mating surfaces sparingly,1/8" bead.It does not seal until you bolt the halves together-you can go to lunch and come back, and it will still be soft, and ready to seal up.I have been using it since the'80s,and not once had a leak. If,for example, you pull an axle on your 584,it might have a gasket, but case-ih will sell you the locktite 515-anaerobic sealant in place of a gasket. And what squeezes out will be soft and pliable a year later.Where it bolts up tight will be dry and hard, and hard to clean, unless you use a buffer/die grinder with the scotch brite discs. Some people call them oatmeal cookies.I do like silicone, but if the manual calls for it,it is the the thing to use. An improperly torqued capscrew on an engine head or a shear bolt that is too hard on the driving shaft of a bushog can create havoc and make an expensive and uncalled for repair. Lets examine the purpose and design of these fasteners in order to ensure their proper use. Fasteners are probably one of the aspects of mechanics that is given the least amount of thought.
