The brakes aren't necessarily "bad". In addition to usage and wear, they "live" in oil and sometimes come apart with age and some say using the wrong hydraulic oil/transmission fluid hastens their demise. (The last 4010 is what, 57years old!) Things don't least forever!
Some of these machines will chatter and carry on even when the pads are OK.
If his are REALLY bad, meaning the brakes have gone "metal-to-metal" he's setting himself up for $$$ transmission and hydraulic issues if he's continuing to run it with steel grindings in the transmission.
