I have a (either '58 or '59) John Deere 95 round back. I got this combine a couple years ago, it had been sitting for a long long time in a shed, I got it going and I have used it to harvest wheat the last 2 years. I'll be honest, I don't know much about any of this, I only just started farming a couple years ago and I'm new to combines. Both times I cut with this combine I had some friends around (long time farmers), they told me to slow the combine (drive speed) down, but I could not slow it down because I was already in 1st gear with the variable speed slowed as much as it could go. They said it seemed really fast to them for 1st gear which I agreed but it still seemed to cut good. The more I got to messing with the combine the more I realize that something is goofy with the transmission. It's like it's stuck in a higher gear, I can shift it into the other gears and it still runs the same speed although reverse works like it should.
Anyone have any ideas on what could be wrong and what kind of a job am I looking at?
