We put up a fence near the house using western cedar 15 years ago, they may last another 5.
Eastern red cedar make good post but it needs to be mostly red, the white part will rut off in a couple of years but the red will last 30-40 years or longer.
Most eastern cedars cut from old growth woods cedar will have less than 1" of white and many times only a 1/2" of white, cedar cut from over grown fields or untended ground will be mostly white and are junk.
I bought some property that hadn't been tended in over 50 years and was grown up in cedars and pines, while clearing some of that ground I though I might get a few post out of some of the larger dia cedars. After cutting a couple of the 8-12 dia trees off there was less than 50% red in the center, we pushed everything up into a burn pile.
