Theres a bushing that sits behind that bearing, is it there? Beyond that, I'd check the whole sway bar unit for play, maybe there's a bushing or bearing worn. Is the knife head pitman in good shape? Is there any sign the machine has been crashed into something at some point? If the upper and lower shims for the knife bar are there, I can't see why it would run against the back real hard unless something is worn, bent or broken.
