Hey Matt, It is a long way up here... and yes it's pretty impressive. I forget that the big conifer trees are not as common everywhere as here. Forestry is still big on the west coast. Even in Nanaimo / Ladysmith is fairly dependant on the forest industry. I know many people directly involved in logging or reforestation ...
On the way over to Tofino there is a City called Port Albernie. You would have driven through it. I found an old truck / equipment museum run by old volunteers slowly restoring stuff. It was fantastic. I'll need to make a trip back there and get more pictures.
Where are you from in Aus? I traveled your country 25 years ago in a bus staying st backpackers and hostels.... didn't make it to Perth though. Got stuck in a flood between Cains and Mt Isa for a week. Bus got in between rising rivers and we were stuck at little crossroad town with a bar, 10 houses and 2000 acres of flooded sugar cane. Had to airlift in food and take a pregnant lady out.... it was a great trip for a 22 year old.
