Sometime in the 70s to early 80s trucks started costing more than cars. They became a high profit item for the manufacturers. I don't know if it was one particular theme or movie or what.
I wish I had bought a truck at this time rather than a car. This is also when the manufacturers started making a lot more front wheel drive cars which may have been a factor in people switching to trucks. There were still a fair number of midsize cars that were still rwd. Too many of the front wheel drive cars had timing belts which were a %^^###$ to change and did not last as long as a timing chain.
