We run shallow for a couple of reasons. Here a field cultivator is used primarily for weed control and seedbed smoothing. For these jobs just shallow operation is all that is required and it uses less fuel than going deep. More importantly, shallow cultivating allows for seed placement into the firm, moist soil underneath the dry worked layer. With our fickle weather if you cultivate deep then place the seeds in the loose soil it could dry out before the seedlings got their roots down to the moisture.
