I have heavy clay ground and horses too. A few years back I put 3-4"s of crusher chip down in their pen/ dirt pit area. That was three years ago and it's stayed pretty decent but still mucked up in the real wet spots this spring. It's worked decent though and a lot better than nothing, but it's slowly getting eaten. Seven years ago I built a pad/parking area for equipment and I had to put down a couple of feet of largish rocks and then about a foot of gravel over that to get something decently solid to park on without sinking out of sight.
I would not recommend any wood chips or shavings or anything like that. Short term gain for long term pain IMO.
