Batteries start the engine. Charging system provides current for operating and recharges the battery. Alternators and generators are NOT intended to recharge a dead battery. They are intended to maintain the proper charge in an operating electrical system. The starter draws the battery down some, the charging system replaces that energy that was taken to start the engine. The charging system is also intended to provide current for the operating loads like lights, accessories, ignition (on a gas engine), and any other electrical needs.
The most economical way to repair a problem is to diagnose first, and replace the components that are truly needing replacement.
