A wise old carpenter once said "once you know all the tricks, then you know the trade." The gear on my power steering pump is held on with a nut with this lock washer to lock the nut from coming loose when you bend up the tabs after the nut is torqued down. The problem is, when you bend the tabs up, many times they break because steel work hardens after it is bent a couple of times and then where are you going to find another washer like that one? It only takes a couple of minutes to heat it red hot and then let it air cool to anneal the metal and it won't break when you bend it to lock it! I know that a lot of you guys have little tricks that you could share, whether it be in mechanics, carpentry, cooking, painting, welding or whatever. I for one, would like to know some of your tricks!
