Lots and lots of replies already, and I haven't made it through half of them. However, one thing popped to mind -- a word that I HAVE NOT heard mentioned, written, or even uttered-under-the-breath for years. That word is "modesty". We eat well here. Life is easy, compared to past history and compared with most under-developed nations. We take so very much for granted, like many kids and even lots of adults not even realizing that the beef, chicken and pork they buy in the grocery stores used to be living animals. There are violent shows on TV and internet, violent video games, ALWAYS violence on the news (gee, is it true that nobody wants to hear 'good' stories?), kids having larger and more luxurious homes than their parents, nicer and newer cars (remember when you didn't even have a car??) and basically all the food and drink one can handle, all at the ready.

Society doesn't want just normal people who can fail, but learn from that failure. Also, everyone is a winner and "deserves" a trophy. 2nd-hand clothes from your older brothers/sisters? ABSURD!! Hell, kids have their own cell phones nowdays!

I believe one of the MAJOR missing pieces in all of this mess is the lack of modesty. I've seen schools on TV, some in fictional programs and some real-life examples on the news, where kids run around as if they're at the beach or by a pool or in what SHOULD BE a private place!

Too many people are pushed into college. Hey, not everyone is cut out for continued education. However, they're likely to have a difficult time in life, as it's no longer possible to make a living working on cars, or teaching yourself to do something else to earn a living. No, now you have to be degreed and certified and licensed and insured/bonded.

Also in the past, wars were deadlier. The chance of someone getting killed or wounded was far greater than now. The likelihood of seeing your buddies die beside you a slow, agonizing death is much less common.

Wife and I just happened to watch the movie "Free State of Jones" last night and it showed how strips of fabric at the field hospital were rinsed out by dunking in a large barrel of water, then hung out to dry. It showed people pouring buckets of water over the wood floors to try and rinse all the blood away in preparation for the next onrush of casualties. How many people lost their lives back then due simply to diseases and non-sterile environments?

In short, discipline, respect, and modesty need to make strong comebacks to our world. Sadly, I think the time for that is long past. There's no way for cities to return to a time where the city slept at night. No way to return to a time when good, healthy food was served around the dinner table with your family, and WITHOUT any electronic devices going, including a TV.

It's a new world out there, and I'm afraid there's no stopping it. Without a proper sense of modesty, there is not enough self control within our society in order for people to be self-regulating. Without that, I can't help but wonder if it's a downhill slope from here.

Today's Featured Article - The Day Mom Drove the 8N - by Brian Browning. My Dad was wanting to put in a garden but couldn't operate the 8N and handle the old horse drawn plow he had found and rigged up to use with the tractor. Well, he decided to go get Mom out of the house and have her drive the tractor while he walked behind the plow. You got to understand that while my Mom is a hard worker who will always help whenever she can... she had never operated farm machinery before that day. Dad got her out there, explained how the clutch was the same as in our o ... [Read Article]
