I would remove the brush assembly, check the springs and brush length, clean the sides of the brushes and the inside of the holder, make sure they slide freely in the holder.
Then polish the rings with fine Emory cloth, or Crocus cloth if you can find it, then clean the rings with contact cleaner, blow away any grit left from the cleaning process.
If the rings are out of round, they will work for a while, but will probably arc. Eventually need to be trued in a lathe if the armature ever needs to come out.
