Re-evaluations are always controversial, but the towns around here (southern Cayuga county) have been doing them. It's been a few years for us, but we're still fairly close to 100%. We still have town appointed/hired assessors. They work at the pleasure of the town board, which doesn't want to address any of it. I'm not a fan of bigger government, but I think our county would be better served to consolidate assessment to the county level, where an office and a telephone would allow for access. Assessors here, and apparently everywhere, think their job is to jack prices way up. Fortunately, once our assessor has been slapped down (on a specific parcel) by the review board, it stays that way. So far. This is all so annoying as property tax is a horse and buggy era tax. Property ownership is not the best indicator of wealth that it once was. I would like to see the tax structure change, but we've been going down this path for so long, I can't imagine the catastrophe it would take to change it.
