That kind of height is not uncommon for rye if a little nitrogen is applied. The problem with it is that by the time it is fit to combine it is only about 12 inches high and completly tangled. We combine about 40 acres a year to clean and sell for cover crop seed. Makes a lot of straw that is much better than wheat straw. The worst to combine is when about half is down and the rest is standing. You are combing the ground on one side of the head while the standing stuff is wrapping around the reel. I run a Deere 105 diesel with a 13 ft head and can cut about 10-12 acres a day in the down stuff. Have never had and whole fields of nice standing stuff to cut. Tom
