I'm 85 years old and all I ever heard it called was dead furrow..I think it was called that was because it was if they'd plow the dead furrow in the same spot too many times it would get so deep that nothing would grow there because the good dirt was gone and it was down to the clay. I would always turn around and plow the furrow back shut as soon as I had a strip done. I would lower the front of the plow and raise the back end part way to close the furrow..
