Before I bought my own baler, a neighbor had me hook up my 1971 model 5000 to his Vermeer 504I....pulled it with no issues at all.
Wound up buying a NH 855 baler (5-1/2 x 5-1/2 chain baler)...it was all my 5000 wanted. Admittedly, my 5000 was/is tired, could use an overhaul. Wound up accumulating more tractors, currently pull the baler with a Ford 8700. The 5000 gets used for mowing/raking.
As far as backing up...the 855 has a kicker and I supposedly don't need to back up. However, there have been a few times where the bale wouldn't eject all the way (rolling ground/hills), and I needed to pull forward a bit. So out of habit, I do back up 5-6 feet just for some wiggle room.
